Complete Guide to CBSE Percentage Calculation
Calculating your CBSE board exam percentage correctly is crucial for college admissions, scholarship applications, and future academic pursuits. This comprehensive guide explains the official CBSE percentage calculation methods for both Class 10th and Class 12th.
10th CBSE Class 10th Percentage
For CBSE Class 10th, the percentage is calculated based on the best of five subjects out of the six main subjects. The subjects typically include:
- English (Language 1)
- Hindi/Sanskrit (Language 2)
- Mathematics
- Science
- Social Science
- 6th Additional Subject (Optional)
The subject with the lowest marks among these six is excluded, and percentage is calculated from the remaining five subjects.
12th CBSE Class 12th Percentage
For CBSE Class 12th, percentage is calculated based on all main subjects in your chosen stream:
- Science: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics/Biology, English, +1 Optional
- Commerce: Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, English, +1 Optional
- Arts/Humanities: History, Political Science, Geography, English, +1 Optional

Official CBSE Percentage Calculation Formula
Example: Class 10th Calculation
If a student scores: English(85), Hindi(90), Math(95), Science(88), SST(92), IT(80)
Lowest subject (IT-80) is excluded.
Total of best 5 = 85+90+95+88+92 = 450
Maximum marks = 5 × 100 = 500
Percentage = (450 ÷ 500) × 100 = 90%
CGPA to Percentage Conversion
CBSE provides the official formula for CGPA conversion:
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
Example: If CGPA is 8.4
Percentage = 8.4 × 9.5 = 79.8%
This formula is standardized by CBSE for all conversions.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q1: How is CBSE percentage different from other boards?
CBSE follows a specific “best of 5” rule for Class 10th, where the lowest scoring subject among the main six is excluded. For Class 12th, all main subjects are considered. This differs from some state boards that may include all subjects or have different total marks per subject.
Q2: Is the CGPA to percentage formula (×9.5) accurate?
Yes, multiplying CGPA by 9.5 is the official formula provided by CBSE for converting CGPA to percentage. This formula is standardized and accepted by all universities and colleges in India.
Q3: What if I have additional subjects in CBSE?
For Class 10th, additional subjects are generally not included in the percentage calculation unless specified by the school. For Class 12th, additional subjects may be included if they are part of your main subject combination.
Q4: How are practical marks included in percentage?
For subjects with both theory and practical components, add both marks together for that subject. For example, if Physics has 70 theory marks and 30 practical marks, your total Physics marks would be 100.
